Plan, Elevation, and Section in a Drawing

To get complete details of an object in the drawing plan, elevation and sections are very important. In simple words, Plans, elevations, and sections are 2D visuals that indicate a 3D object.

For better understanding, I have provided a complete drawing including plan, elevation, and section. ( Refer to below figure)

Plan, elevation and section in a drawing

For better visualization I am representing plan, elevation and section separately.

Table of Contents

Plan in a Drawing:

A plane represents the parts of the object which touch the floor or assumed to be in a way that how it looks when laid on the plan. Only those components are considered which laid on the plan surface. Anything in the space does not consider.

Elevation In a Drawing:

Elevation in a drawing is a vertical plan looking straight toward the building. Basically, there are 4 elevations left, right, front and rear. when we make exterior elevation we avoid any obstacles coming at front of the building. In the case of interior space,  this would include any windows or doors as well as any built-in furniture that is in direct contact with the wall.

Section In a Drawing:

A section is cut through any object, room, or whole building vertically. A person seems to be stood directly in front looking straight at the section. A sectional drawing shows more details.
