Standard or Normal Consistency Test of Cement by VICAT Apparatus

The consistency test of cement is performed to calculate the amount of water content that is to be added to cement to attain Standard consistency or normal consistency of cement.

In this standard or normal consistency test of cement, we will discuss the VICAT apparatus. So we will define it according to the Vicat apparatus.

Quantity of water added in cement to penetrate the Vicat plunger up to a depth of 5-7 millimetres from the bottom of the Vicat mould or 33 to 35 millimetres from the top of the Vicat Mould.

VICAT Apparatus:

The following apparatuses are required to perform tests.

  • Weighing balance of 1000 gram with accuracy 1gram
  • Measuring cylinder of 200 ml,
  • VICAT apparatus
  • VICAT Mould
  • Glass plate
  • The plunger of 10 mm diameter
  • Hand Trowel

Test Procedure:

  • Take a 400-gram cement sample.
  • Place this cement sample in a tray.
  • Consider the standard consistency of water at 28%.
  • Add the same quantity in cement and mix it properly.
  • Mix the cement paste for 3 to 5 minutes. The total time taken to obtain cement paste is known as gauging time.
  • Now fill the paste in Vicat mould effectively any excessive paste that remained on Vicat mould is taken off by using a trowel.
  • Now place the Vicat mould on the plate and observe whether the plunger is touching the surface Vicat moult or not. Make sure it is touching the surface of VICAT mould.
  • Now release the plunger and permit it to sink into the test mould.
  • Note down total penetration of the plunger from the bottom of the mould as indicated don the scale.
  • Repeat this experiment again and again by adding different percentages of water until the reading is in between 5-7 millimetres on the Vicat apparatus scale.
