What is Flux and Types of Flux?

Imaginary lines through a physical quantity can travel is known as Flux. Flux word derived from the Italian word Fluxus means to flow.

For transport reasons, the flux is a vector quantity, indicating the size and bearing of the progression of a property or substance.

Isaac Newton used the word fluxion but in modern science, we use flux for better understanding.

Types of Flux

There are various types of flux as described below.

  1. Electric Flux
  2. Magnetic Flux
  3. Luminous Flux
  4. Energy Flux
  5. Heat Flux
  6. Mass Flux
  7. Momentum Flux
  8. Acoustic Flux

1. Electric Flux

Electric field lines passing through a closed surface are known as electric flux. SI unit of electric flux is a voltmeter and it is represented by φE.

2. Magnetic Flux

Magnetic field lines passing through a closed surface are known as magnetic flux. SI unit of electric flux is Weber and it is represented by φE.

3. Luminous Flux

The line of transmitted visually sensible radiated energy per second is called luminous flux. Its SI unit is Lumen (lm).

4. Energy Flux

The line of transmitted radiated energy per second from any energy source is called Energy flux. Its SI unit is Watt. It is represented by φV.

5. Heat Flux

Heat energy transfer through an elementary surface per second is called heat flux. SI unit of heat flux is W/m2 and it is represented as Φq.

6. Mass Flux

The rate of mass flow per unit area is called. SI unit is kg/s-m2 and it is represented as J or q.

7. Momentum Flux

The flow of momentum across unit area per second is known as momentum flux. SI unit of momentum flux is N/m2.

8. Acoustic Flux

The flow of sound energy through a unit area per second is known as acoustic flux. Its SI unit is Watt.
